Newsy                       Columbia, MO

Entertainment Editorial Assistant

May 2019 - Present

Being at the number one J-school in the country has its perks, and Newsy was one of those. I took a class that allowed me to work at Newsy and learn from a different type of news network. I worked as a Student Content Producer, writing, editing and anchoring national and international news stories. Now, I create entertainment news briefings for multiple clients. These "Newsy Briefs" are 15-second snippets of information that air like commercials do on multiple platforms. It gives me an outlet to cover entertainment stories for a national outlet, and it's something I've loved doing. I think Newsy is one of the most creative news outlets today, and it is so refreshing to work in that environment.

KOMU-TV                     Columbia, MO

Entertainment Anchor & Producer                                          March 2018 - May 2019

This is my favorite type of work. I have loved the pop culture world ever since I was a little girl. My mom always watched E! News or Entertainment Tonight while we ate dinner, so I'd like to say I was somehow brought up on it. Living in mid-Missouri, it's hard to be in the entertainment world. This was my little snippet. For the Red Carpet Report segment, I chose pop culture and entertainment stories, wrote scripts and produced video packages. I then acted as anchor for the segment. I wish I could do it all day.

Reporter

March 2018 - May 2019

Being a reporter at KOMU, the local NBC affiliate TV station, while in college was an interesting and rewarding experience. The long nights and early mornings were tough, but it was so worth it. I have experienced the real environment of a fast-paced newsroom, and I have learned to be a better journalist because of it. I created day-turn stories for the nightly newscast each shift. I come with pitches in hand, then I go out for interviews, shoot video, create scripts, edit a video package and create a web story. I also made enterprise and HFR pieces, one of which was a two-part investigation that took me months to finish. There is truly nothing like reporting.

Producer

January 2019 - May 2019

A producer's plate is always full, and it's exciting. As a producer, I created the entire rundown for the newscast, and I worked to always make it interesting. This included choosing compelling national and international stories, stacking my reporters' stories in a sensible format, and writing scripts, teases, headlines and promos. I also communicated with anchors, studio crew and reporters throughout my shifts to ensure a smooth show. I love being in front of the camera, but I learned I also love being behind the scenes of it all as it's happening.

Digital Producer

October 2017 - May 2019

My first job at KOMU was the role of digital producer. As a DP, I am the digital face of the station. I wrote breaking news stories, updated the website with national and international news coverage, ran all the social media accounts and interacted with viewers through comments and messages. This taught me the ins and outs of the station when I was first starting out. I have learned the importance of digital engagement to pump viewership, and now I use that knowledge to my advantage in all my other jobs. I also made digital-specific video for our Facebook page. These stories were so fun for me, and I loved the different writing, shooting and editing techniques you could use in creating them.

Relevant Youth              Columbia, MO

Host and Podcast Producer

January 2019 - May 2019

I had always wanted to be the host of a web series or podcast, so I created one. Relevant Youth is a student-run creative agency in Columbia. I knew they had a podcast team that mainly focused on showcasing student talent or athletes. I thought it would be interesting to show off the city's local hotspots that we all go to in a way that would interest students. In a college town, there are TONS of places that compete against each other, whether it be coffee shops, bars, restaurants, etc. So, I decided instead of just showing those places, lets show that competition. I pitched and created "Versus," a podcast and web show that pits one hot spot against another, with my co-host and I judging then getting input from other students. I also edited the series. It was such a fun and exciting outlet for me, and it let me show off my creativity and non-serious side.

KMOV                                                                     St. Louis, MO

Great Day St. Louis Intern

September - December 2017

I had SO much fun over the summer because of this internship. Great Day St. Louis is an entertainment and lifestyle-based morning show on KMOV, the CBS affiliate TV station in St. Louis. I had a few roles at Great Day. I was a writer, producer, floor director, you name it. It was always something new, and I loved it. It was my first experience working with guest "stars" on a show. From musicians, to actors, to chefs, to the other people who worked on the show, I met so many inspiring people. It reiterated my love for the entertainment and TV world.

KBIA                                                                            Columbia, MO

Reporter

September - December 2017

This was my first venture in broadcast. When I reported at KBIA, the local NPR-member radio station, I would create day-turn stories, typically about local news or events. I interviewed using radio-specific equipment, wrote both web and radio stories, then edited and prepared my story for the afternoon newscast. KBIA taught me the importance of sound. It gave me a greater attention to background and detail in all my future recording settings.

Multiply                        St. Louis, MO

Content Editorial Intern

May - August 2017

My very first internship was at Multiply. It is a digital media company based out of St. Louis. When I started, the company was recently expanding from Answers.com to include more editorial websites like Urbo, HealthyWay and FashionBeans. I wrote and published articles for those sites, and I edited and provided feedback to freelance writers on their content. By the end of the summer, I helped double the amount of articles published per day. Multiply taught me the digital media side of journalism. I had never worked with freelancers, and I learned editing skills that I use to edit even my own work.
